Rusty Chicken spent the past two years taking advantage of the COVID shutdown and invested a considerable amount of time adding new songs to their repertoire. This includes writing a number of original songs. Four of these songs, Valedia, Escaping Into Hemingway, Motivated Reasoning and Luck, Love and Magic are now featured in the Spring 2022 song lineup with more to be added soon.
Each of the new original songs have unique and interesting backstories. Here’s a behind the scenes look into Escaping Into Hemingway.
This song is inspired in part by the Hemingway documentary film on the life of Ernest Hemingway produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. The documentary aired in April 2021 and resonated with Steve, Rusty Chicken’s bass player, who had already been working on some lyrics about a gentleman in the latter stages of life. As the song’s protagonist reflects on his life’s journey, he encounters struggles recalling the key details of some events, especially those that he had previously tried so hard to forget. The working title for the song was, Trying to Remember What I Tried to Forget. The Hemingway documentary provided the inspiration Steve needed to flesh out a few verses and a chorus. After sharing the initial concept with Jeff, the band’s lead singer and rhythm guitarist, the two collaborated to complete the lyrics which carry the original theme and incorporate literary references that fans of Ernest Hemingway may pick up on. As the lyrics were nearing completion, Jeff composed the melody and recorded a couple of demos to share with the band who then worked together to bring the song into its current form. Listen for Escaping Into Hemingway at upcoming shows and let the band know what you think!
